Chlorophyll Printing Workshop with Rosalba Breazeale

  • 205 Ocean Ave Portland United States (map)

Left: Chlorophyll Print
Right: Digital Negative

Chlorophyll printing is an alternative photographic process where by photographic images are developed on natural leaves through the action of photosynthesis. This plant based process does not require chemicals to create the image since the photographs are exposed directly to the sunlight on plant leaves. There is an optional secondary step to permanently fix the print without which this remains an ephemeral process and the print may fade or deteriorate over time. No experience is necessary to create a photogram, which is a process by which 2D objects are placed on a light sensitive surface (in this case, a leaf).

The 2-hour workshop will be held on Saturday, July 27 from 12-2pm in person. I will demonstrate how to create a photogram or a photo using a digital negative on a leaf. We will discuss leaf choice and steps for permanently fixing a chlorophyll print. Should the weather be sunny, participants will create and begin exposing their chlorophyll prints. If it is rainy, participants will prepare their leaves for printing at home.

Supplies: Each participant should bring a clip frame or photo frame with glass (a rental can be provided upon request). Leaves will be provided for printing on or students may forage for their own in advance. Should you choose to forage your own, collect no sooner than the evening before and keep the stem in water overnight. Stencils and construction paper will be provided for photograms or you may bring your own 2D objects.

Advanced photo students may bring a high contrast digital positive negative (ex. image on right).

A detailed list of supplies will be emailed within 48 hours of registration.

Weather: This is an outdoor workshop. Please be prepared to work in the heat and sun (with some shade available). Bring a water bottle. You are welcome to bring a folding chair and snacks to share. In the event of rain, the workshop will still take place on a covered porch.

Cancellation policy: If you cancel more than 7 days before the beginning of your workshop, you will receive a full refund. Cancellation with less than 7 days notice will result in a half refund.
