Cyanotype on Recycled Fabric Workshop

  • 205 Ocean Avenue Portland United States (map)

Unlike photographs created with silver, such as lumen or traditional silver gelatin prints, cyanotypes are made using a solution of iron compounds. Silver gelatin negatives, digital negatives or physical objects may be used to create a print that is archival and bright blue.

The 2-hour workshop will be held Sunday August 11, 2024 from 11am to 11pm in person. We will begin working indoors as I demonstrate how to mix and coat cyanotype solution on fabric as well as how to fix the print after exposure. Participants will then coat fabric. Should the weather be sunny, participants will create photogram exposures outside and fix their prints at the end. Otherwise, students will be able to take their coated fabric home to create photographs when they have sun.

Supplies: Each participant should bring 2D objects (flowers, leaves, sheer/semi-sheer fabric, etc) or 3D objects (small glass or solid objects with interesting silhouettes). All other materials will be provided. If you would like to bring your own fabric, it must be natural (100% cotton works best). I often find cotton bed sheets at thrift stores. Some cyanotype solution will be provided, but if you would like to coat a large piece of fabric, you should bring your own. A detailed list of supplies will be emailed within 48 hours of registration.

Weather: This is an indoor/outdoor workshop. Please be prepared to work in the heat and sun (some shade available). Bring a water bottle. You are welcome to bring a folding chair and snacks to share. In the event of rain, the workshop will take place indoors.

Cancellation policy: If you cancel more than 7 days before the beginning of your workshop, you will receive a full refund. Cancellation with less than 7 days notice will result in a half refund.
